Supplementation in insulin resistance

Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. This can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other health complications. Supplementation with the right ingredients can support the fight against insulin resistance. In this article, I will discuss three key supplements: berberine, inositol and vitamin B12.

Berberine is a plant alkaloid found in the roots and bark of plants such as barberry. Studies have shown that berberine can significantly improve insulin sensitivity, which helps lower blood sugar levels. It works at the cellular level by activating the enzyme AMPK, which regulates energy metabolism.

  • Benefits: Increase insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar, improve lipid profile, reduce inflammation.
  • Dosage: the typical dose is 500 mg 2-3 times a day.
  • Recommended preparations: Supplements containing pure berberine.

Inositol, often referred to as vitamin B8, is a chemical compound that plays an important role in regulating hormonal and metabolic health. It is particularly beneficial for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and insulin resistance. Inositol helps improve insulin sensitivity and can regulate the menstrual cycle.

  • Benefits: Improve insulin sensitivity, regulate menstrual cycle, support ovarian health, reduce PCOS symptoms.
  • Dosage: myo-inositol: 4 g daily; d-chiro-inositol: 100 mg daily (40:1 ratio).
  • Recommended preparations: Supplements containing myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol.

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is essential for the production of red blood cells and the proper functioning of the nervous system. Vitamin B12 deficiencies are common in people with insulin resistance, especially those using metformin, a drug often prescribed to control blood sugar levels.

  • Benefits: Supports red blood cell production, supports nervous system health, and helps with cellular metabolism.
  • Dosage: Depends on individual needs, usually 500-2000 mcg per day.
  • Recommended preparations: Supplements containing vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin.

Patients taking metformin should regularly monitor their vitamin B12 levels to prevent vitamin B12 deficiency!

Berberine, inositol and vitamin B12 are three supplements that may have key support in the fight against OI or PCOS. Remember, however, to consult with your doctor or nutritionist before starting supplementation to choose the right dosages and formulations for your individual needs. Supplementation can be a powerful tool in managing insulin resistance, but should be used as part of a broader approach that includes a healthy diet, regular physical activity and other health recommendations.
